The summer was an … My summer in Cambridge has given me the opportunity to visit and talk with people from all across the University – to listen and learn, and to think together about plans and aspirations as we look ahead. For new parents and carers we would love to invite you to our parent and carer forum. We have a responsibility to put our passion and skills to work, to maintain the excellence for which the Kennedy School is known, and to make a positive difference in the lives of people everywhere. We have an exciting year ahead of us and we’re pleased to have each one of you participating in it. I like to think, however, that the event is not about a person, or even an office, but about the larger community of learning. By choosing this program, you have also chosen to be a part of the change as solar energy engineers, leaders and makers of a tomorrow where the transition to renewables is complete. Last spring marked the adoption of a new curricular framework for general education, after years of important discussion and debate. Ahead lies the equally important – and no less challenging – work of designing an array of new courses and shaping the elements of the overall curriculum into a cohesive whole. I created this video to welcome students and parents to a new school year. I want to extend my warmest greetings to the Emory community, including all those who are joining Emory for the first time this year. For those of you who are returning, I hope you had an interesting and restorative summer. The Kennedy School aims to have 90 percent of students eligible to vote in the United States registered to vote, and we will use TurboVote, a tool developed by alumni Seth Flaxman MPP 2011 and Kathryn Peters MPP 2011, to help with this effort. More than 1,000 international scholars and 3,100 international students from nearly 100 countries will study and work on our campuses this year, demonstrating that Atlanta and Emory are gateways to the world. We are still recruiting several other faculty members who were selected in searches last year. This is why we have brought for you, a collection of some extra-ordinary welcome messages. Within months, we hope to break ground on the first science complex in Allston – a milestone in our larger efforts to shape new spaces hospitable to interdisciplinary collaboration, and to extend our campus in ways that will brighten our academic future, benefit the surrounding community, and reinforce our commitment to sustainability. I have seen many other examples of our work in projects focused elsewhere in the United States and in my travels as dean to China, the Middle East, Mexico, India, and other places. May that spirit welcome all of us into this new academic year. There will also be several academic events to continue to celebrate our first hundred years. Many citizens believe that their leaders are choosing public policies that serve narrow interests rather than broad ones, or that policies have been designed or implemented poorly. Mohsen Mostafavi will join us as Dean of the Faculty of Design next January. In this message, I describe some of the challenges to public policy and leadership that I see today and a few of the ways the Kennedy School is addressing those challenges. At a recent gathering of Harvard students and alumni focused on public service, he said: “It’s our responsibility to engage.
